Jon Suder is one of a dwindling number of Americans who recently bought a new piano. He wasn’t planning to. The Fort Worth attorney still beams with pride when showing off the 1922 Steinway baby grand that he and his siblings took lessons on as kids. But Suder is a big supporter of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, even hosting competitors in his home. Steinway & Sons moves pianos into every host family home, so the competitors can practice.

The 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition begins Wednesday, with two fewer competitors than planned. Korkmaz Can Sağlam, 25, of Turkey and Anastasia Vorotnaya, 30, of Russia both withdrew, citing health reasons. Neither competitor will be replaced, leaving 28 artists left in the running. “It’s very sad. They prepare for years to achieve this level of playing and what they prepare for the Cliburn, it’s a very demanding repertoire,” said Jacques Marquis, president and CEO of the Cliburn.

Tucked away in an industrial area of Garland is a small, unassuming building that holds the keys to Texas music history. Audio Dallas, formerly Autumn Sound Studios, is where the king of outlaw country, Willie Nelson, recorded three albums, including Red Headed Stranger, which turned 50 this spring. Garland hosted a two-day, citywide celebration that included tours of the storied studio. Paul and Kim Osborn bought the property in the mid-’90s and have been running it ever since.

This weekend, the city celebrates the anniversary of Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger, the album that would become his longtime nickname. The two-day celebration includes a screening of the movie Red Headed Stranger, free performances from North Texas artists and a ticketed tribute concert.
