Rochester-based car-care company Monro, Inc. will close 145 underperforming locations nationwide in fiscal 2026, new president and CEO Peter Fitzsimmons said in a May 28 earnings call. Sales for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending March 29, 2025, decreased 4.9% to $295 million, compared with $310.1 million for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year that ended March 30, 2024.

The Rochester area’s oldest luxury car dealership has a new owner and soon will have a new look. Valley Cadillac, established in 1936 by a group of businessmen including Daniel J. Meagher Sr. and Western Union Telegraph founder Hiram Sibley, and operated by three generations of the Meagher family, is now part of the Bob Johnson Auto Group. “It was just time,” Edward T. General Motors is eliminating 74 jobs at its plant at 1000 Lexington Ave., effective June 2. Dan Maloney, president of United Auto Workers Local 1097, which represents more than 600 plant workers, said sluggish electric vehicle sales and the relocation of a manufacturing line to Mexico were to blame.

Consumer confidence has risen in the past month, the latest report released by The Conference Board reveals. According to the think tank's Consumer Confidence Index, in May, consumer confidence increased by 12.3 points to 98, up from 85.7 in April. About half of this month's responses were collected following the Trump administration's pause on some proposed tariffs on imports from China.

Layoffs at all Rite Aid stores across New York state will begin June 4, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification. The WARN notice was posted May 23 to the state’s Department of Labor website. In addition, as of June 5, Rite Aid no longer will honor store gift cards or accept returns or exchanges, the company states on its website.

Grocery prices fell by 0.1% in April after rising 0.4% in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported May 13. The labor bureau data show that the average price of eggs tumbled 12.7% last month after a spike caused by a bird flu outbreak that has now eased. However, egg prices remain high; a dozen Grade A eggs are still $5.12 on average. The cost of breakfast cereal fell 2.5%; rice, 2.3%; chicken, 0.3%; and bacon, 1%.
