New York consumers are one step closer to having stronger protections against deceptive and abusive business practices. The Fostering Affordability and Integrity through Reasonable Business Practices, or FAIR Business Practices Act, which aims to protect consumers and small businesses from unfair, deceptive and abusive practices, was passed by both the Senate and Assembly before the end of the legislative session and is now awaiting Gov. Kathy Hochul's signature.

Food costs edged up 0.3% in May, according to a report issued June 11 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Overall, food prices are 2.9% higher than they were a year ago. New Yorkers can now file online complaints about New York State Department of Motor Vehicles-regulated businesses, such as repair shops, auto dealers and inspection stations. Over 470 customers benefited from actions taken by the DMV against repair shops and auto dealers last year, according to the state DMV, which amounted to refunds or vehicle repairs valued at almost $1.5 million.
