    With temperatures for the day peaking in the mid-70s and abundant bright sunshine very much in evidence, the conditions were perfect for Escalon’s first Farmer’s Market of the season. Booths were set up throughout the Main Street Park area, while musicians performed on stage, food booths were set up in the paved area to the west of the park and there was also an art station for kids.

    My brother sent both my sister and I a text this past week; it included a photo of wildflowers, recently bloomed in the yard outside his house, coated with a layer of snow on the colorful petals. His comment was simple: “Hey, I thought it was spring …” My sister and I each texted back, with smiling emojis, because even though she and I are both now living in California, we remember those upstate New York springs.

    Just a handful of contests remain for teams during this spring sports season at Escalon High School. All were busy this past week, with games and matches for boys volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, boys golf and track and field. Following is a recap of the action. BOYS VOLLEYBALL Falling on the road, the varsity volleyball boys regrouped and came back to get a win at home. They faced off first against Orestimba on the road, April 7, a team they had beaten 3-1 earlier in the season.

    Several projects are still in need of volunteers, as the City of Action gears up for the Love Riverbank work day, on the calendar for Saturday, April 26. A part of the Love Stanislaus County initiative, the 2025 citywide volunteer day is scheduled to begin in Riverbank at 8 a.m. There are projects to benefit schools, pets, non-profit groups and more with a number of opportunities to serve.

    Several projects are still in need of volunteers, as the community gears up for the Love Oakdale work day on Saturday, April 26. A part of the Love Stanislaus County initiative, the 2025 citywide volunteer day in Oakdale will kick off at 8 a.m. with a rally at the Oakdale Community Park along South Yosemite, with workers fanning out from there to take on their projects. Each has at least one designated project leader, working with a team to get the job done.
