Georgia and much of the Southeast are gearing up for a hotter, wetter summer, with experts also warning of a busier-than-usual hurricane season in the Atlantic, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The June to August 2025 seasonal forecast that was released last week projects above-average temperatures across much of the Southeast, along with a slight increase in the likelihood of wetter-than-normal conditions.

Georgia is the first state in the nation to create a carbon registry program that rewards sustainable building practices with carbon credits, with goals to boost both the state’s environment and economy equally. And while only one building project has made it to the registry since the program started, those who helped start the program are confident more developments in the Peach State will start taking advantage of the program soon.

Georgia PowerConstruction is underway at four new battery energy storage system sites located across Georgia, including one in Bibb County, totaling 765 megawatts of power, Georgia Power announced Wednesday in a news release. The 128 megawatt BESS site in Bibb County follows the state’s first ever BESS site near Columbus, which entered service in 2024. The construction of the Bibb County site is accompanied by three other BESS projects in Lowndes, Floyd and Cherokee counties.

After the city of Perry canceled its recycling services last spring, three Perry High School seniors started the Houston County Recycling Initiative, providing six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school in Houston County’s school district with paper recycling this school year. In itss first year, the Houston County Recycling Initiative has saved an estimated 3,000 pounds of paper from going to the landfill, according to Daniel Chun, one of the founders of the initiative.
