It was a week-and-a-half that rocked Canadian soccer, and now the playing part of it is over. The Canadian women’s national team crashed out of the Paris 2024 Olympics on Saturday with a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Germany in the quarter-finals. The reigning Olympic champions had plenty of chances to score over 120 minutes and were definitively the better side, but couldn’t beat German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

There will be a new Olympic champion. And that feeling sucks. Canada were beaten 4-2 by Germany in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw where CanWNT dominated but couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed. The reality of knockout football is that the better team doesn’t always win. If you can’t finish your chances, you could regret that, and sadly that’s what Canadian players will have on their minds tonight and likely for many months.

Isn’t it nice not to talk about six-point deductions anymore? Now a full week into the Olympic Games, other sports have taken the spotlight at Paris 2024. But make no mistake, it’s been the biggest headline of these Games.

Canada loves supporting the Canadian women’s national team. Add in the fact that the eyes of not just Canadians, not just soccer fans, but the sporting world have been on them over the last couple of weeks, and interest in how CanWNT fare at Paris 2024 is sky-high. And it showed on Wednesday when they took on Colombia in their final group game needing to win to progress to the quarter-finals and keep their gold medal defence alive.

Canada made it out of the group stage with just three points to show for three wins. Now CanWNT must get past a mighty German side to have a chance to defend their gold medal. Completing the uphill task of defeating France and Colombia in four days, Canada finished second in the group to avoid Spain and land Germany in the quarter-finals. The resilient Canadian group probably feel like they have already won a medal, but the knockout stages are just beginning.
