The owner of the Holiday Inn chain of hotels has reported solid first-quarter results with strong demand in Europe and the Middle East offsetting continued decline in China. InterContinental Hotels Group said it was on track to meet full-year 2025 consensus profit expectations, as global revenue per available room (revpar), a key industry metric, jumped 3.3 per cent for the first quarter compared with 3 per cent over the whole of last year.

New gym openings in the UK slowed sharply last year amid claims the market is saturated, rising just 1.8 per cent to 5,030, new figures from the accountancy group UHY Hacker Young show. Gyms were quick to recover after lockdown restrictions were lifted, their numbers rising by a tenth from 4,000 to 4,400 in 2021, but growth has since lost momentum. Last year marked the slowest expansion since the post-pandemic boom.
