Faculty Assembly discusses hiring freeze amid funding challenges

Provost Joseph McCarthy opened Wednesday’s faculty assembly meeting by discussing Pitt’s hiring freeze, which began on March 10. Senior administration imposed the freeze in response to “fiscal uncertainty” from “expected” cuts in federal NIH funding. “In times of challenge, it’s important for us to lean into our mission. The action taken on Monday is related to our mission of becoming an employer of choice,” McCarthy said.

Kendrick Lamar has been a longtime pioneer of the rap scene, holding to the nickname “King Kendrick.” He recently came out with his sixth studio album, “GNX,” a surprise project that dropped on Nov. 22. “GNX” marked Kung Fu Kenny’s first album release since 2022, despite an eventful 2024. A longtime nickname for the rapper, he was featured on Metro Boomin and Future’s song “Like That,” dissing Drake and J. Cole.

Students who walked into the Text & conText Lab on Wednesday afternoon were able to use old scraps, receipts and pictures to create something wholly new. The Center for Creativity hosted a “Junk Journal Journey” event on Wednesday afternoon in Hillman Library’s Text & conText Lab. The lab is a collaborative space shared by the Center for Creativity and the University Library System.
Pitt cross-country wraps up season, women’s basketball squeaks out win

Over the weekend, Pitt cross-country ran in the last race of its season and Pitt women’s basketball won a game despite committing 25 turnovers. Cross-countryPitt cross-country finished out its season on Nov. 15 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. The female and male teams competed in the 6k and 10k respectively at Penn State. The women’s team finished with 258 points.

Center for Creativity brings worlds to creation with ‘Mapping the Infinite’ workshop

The Center for Creativity hosted a “Mapping the Infinite” workshop on Wednesday in the Cathedral of Learning, mainly focusing on building worlds in stories. Worldbuilding emphasizes all of the different details that go into the creation of worlds, including things you might never think twice about. Characters inside these stories are influenced by every little aspect of their environment and reflect these influences in their personalities.
