Ruben Amorim really had no other option. The only message he could give to his players after one of the most resounding away wins not only of his short time in charge but of Manchester United's long European history was to warn against complacency. "I think they have to think about the second leg, and more about the first 20 minutes (of this first leg) than the rest of the game," he said. That was sensible. More than sensible.

Harry Maguire's career arc at Manchester United has had many undulations but his header in stoppage time of extra time against Lyon is sending his trajectory upwards once more. Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot were caught up in it, standing next to each other on the touchline with their arms in the air, willing their 22-year-old team-mate to score what would have been only his second goal in 28 club appearances.

Ruben Amorim has defended Rasmus Hojlund's lack of goals and insists that Manchester United's low scoring rate is a team issue. United's 1-0 defeat at home by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday meant that Hojlund has found the net just once - in last month's victory at Leicester City - in his last 28 appearances for the club, dating back to December 12.
