Twenty-two cars and pickups nearly filled the parking lot at the Soaring Eagle Wetlands near Julian, Pa. The vehicles mainly belonged to anglers taking advantage of the access to a section of Bald Eagle Creek delineated as Keystone Select – and stocked with buckets full of big trout. It should be no surprise that anglers flock to the state’s Keystone Stocked Trout Waters, because they provide excellent catch-and-release fishing for large trout.

In mid-May, I attended the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers conference in Erie. The conference was its usual good mixture of craft improvement seminars, newsmaker presentations and good fellowship. Since I was in the northwest corner of the state, I was particularly interested in presentations by Visit Erie and Captain Eric Guerrin and Teresa Guerrin of TowBoatUS Erie PA. They spoke about the uniqueness of Lake Erie and of Presque Isle Bay in particular. I wanted to see this for myself.

For some it is a day of family fun, for others it is an opportunity for friends to fish together over good populations of stocked trout. Although the creel limit is five trout per day, anglers practicing catch and release have a chance to land many trout in one day.

Since the beginning of “Operation FUTURE” in 1981, Pennsylvania streams having a thriving population of wild trout have been removed from the stocking list. These streams, labeled Class A because of their high trout biomass, can provide excellent fishing without stocking. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission regularly receives requests for some of these formally stocked streams to be returned to the stocking list.
