AbstractEarly plant responses to different stress situations often encompass cytosolic Ca2+ increases, plasma membrane depolarization and the generation of reactive oxygen species1,2,3. However, the mechanisms by which these signalling elements are translated into defined physiological outcomes are poorly understood. Here, to study the basis for encoding of specificity in plant signal processing, we used light-gated ion channels (channelrhodopsins).

AbstractHuman cellular models of neurodegeneration require reproducibility and longevity, which is necessary for simulating age-dependent diseases. Such systems are particularly needed for TDP-43 proteinopathies1, which involve human-specific mechanisms2,3,4,5 that cannot be directly studied in animal models.

AbstractSARS-CoV-2 proteins are translated from subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs). While most of these sgRNAs are monocistronic, some viral mRNAs encode more than one protein. For example, the ORF3a sgRNA also encodes ORF3c, an enigmatic 41-amino acid peptide. Here, we show that ORF3c is expressed in SARS-CoV-2 infected cells and suppresses RIG-I- and MDA5-mediated immune activation and IFN-β induction.

Different TPS1 isoforms differentially affect carbohydrate metabolism during heat stress Given that the tps1 TILLING lines responded more strongly to elevated temperatures in terms of raffinose accumulation, we next wanted to investigate whether TPS1 is also involved in other temperature-dependent responses, in particular toward more stressful temperatures.
