The story of former LBCC student turned entrepreneur Marida Ngov, starts with two refugees fleeing the oppressive rule of the Khmer Rouge in a war-torn Cambodia in the 1970s. Ngov’s mother, Salouen Sak and her future husband Eng Kaing Sok, were stripped of everything by the Khmer Rouge, including their freedom. For Sak, the one thing that she could latch onto was their jewelry, which would later provide the foundation for a better life.

By July, Genuine Foods’ contract will be officially terminated with Long Beach City College at both Pacific Coast Campus and the Liberal Arts Campus. Genuine Foods supplies eateries on both PCC and LAC such as the Carson & Clark and the Viking Express. “As far as we know we’re going to have to find new jobs. The pay here was really good, and I barely make enough money as it is, so it’s going to be a struggle for me, especially with the bills.

Cloudy weather didn’t stop the Social Work Club as they held an information session on Wednesday May 15. The members greeted everyone who came to their table with a smile. “I feel like the club helps empower students to be successful in both their education and community goals,” president of the Social Work Club, David Hernandez said. Hernandez takes a lot of pride in this club due to his hearing disability. He has tinnitus and hears ringing in his ears.

Newly opened food vendor, Carson & Clark is closing in the next 90 days, confirmed Superintendent-President Mike Munoz. “We’re moving forward with a different food distributor from my understanding. I don’t know the full details currently, but we do have a plan.” said Munoz. Students have been wanting cheap food spots close to campus since the closing of the cafeteria during COVID. Eventually starting last semester, food trucks were offered as an expensive alternative.

Long Beach City College hosted Convos and Cuts, an annual event during Black Student Success Week that allows students to get free haircuts while talking to their peers. For this event, barbers were gathered from different areas of California, and gave haircuts to people while also potentially building new clientele. While waiting for their turns, students engaged in conversations with each other in the waiting section; indulging in free food and enjoying live music that was played by a DJ.
