GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Wednesday is the first day of school for students in Gaston County Schools, with a new school on the horizon and some interesting programs returning. Thirty thousand students are returning this week, and this time next year, the district will welcome middle schoolers to a new building. W.P. Grier Middle School is currently under construction along East Garrison Boulevard in Gastonia.

CONCORD, N.C. (WBTV) - This year’s first day of school is a bittersweet one for some Cabarrus County families after a school that saw generations of parents and children pass through shut down. Beverly Hills Elementary closed at the end of last school year, with its student body now split between three other schools while a new one is built. The Cabarrus County Board of Education’s decision to close the decades-old building has not come without pushback.

FORT MILL, S.C. (WBTV) - There are four school districts in York County. Of those, Fort Mill has the smallest geographic footprint but the most students and a rapidly growing population. To keep facilities up to speed with the growing student body, Fort Mill voters approved a $204 million school bond back in February. It will pay for a new middle and elementary school, an early childhood education center, more land for future schools, technology upgrades and other improvements.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - After Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Monday, he and other state officials are expected to provide another update on Wednesday. With Tropical Storm Debby expected to dump inches of rain on the Carolinas over the next few days – including up to eight inches in Charlotte and even more at the coast – flooding has become a legitimate concern.
