Surveillance efforts on the New South Wales Central Coast have ramped up to ensure the most dangerous strain of bird flu does not enter Australia disguised as botulism, which has similar symptoms. Avian botulism is a paralytic disease that can kill wild birds like swans, pelicans, and ducks when they ingest a naturally occurring bacteria-produced toxin. More than a dozen pelicans, some of which have died, have been found with the suspected condition around Tuggerah Lakes in recent weeks.

Three high school students from the New South Wales Central Coast are being treated in hospital after being burnt in a science experiment gone wrong. The incident happened at Brisbane Water Secondary College in Woy Woy at about 9:30am, when three year 10 students were taking part in an experiment reportedly involving ethanol. It is understood another five students were in the science laboratory at the time. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear.

A man has died in a house fire near Woy Woy on the New South Wales Central Coast. The blaze broke out in a St Huberts Island home just after 5.30am Tuesday. It took 20 firefighters several hours to get it under control. Police confirmed the body of a man was found during a later search of the property. He had not been formally identified but was believed he was in his 40s. Two other people managed to escape to safety and were assessed by paramedics. More to come.
