In 1956, volunteers with the Lancaster branch of the American Association of University Women held a modest, three-day book sale inside what was then known as the Lancaster County Free Public Library. They raised $154 to help buy more books for young readers. Back then, the free library was located in its former home, 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster. The volunteer Friends of the Library group, which has long worked to raise money for the library's programs, was gaining in membership that first year.

In 1865, enslaved people in parts of Texas found out the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed 2 1/2 years earlier. On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops delivered the news of freedom in Galveston, Texas. Today, we celebrate this event - and federal holiday - as Juneteenth, a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. There are several events where families and communities can celebrate on and after the holiday next week around Lancaster County.

#StevenTyler is still in #LancasterCountyPA. (@Aerosmith farewell tour that's no doubt being worked out at Rock Lititz starts end of week). Tyler visited local music store & played instruments, bought albums, made up songs, played "Dream On" on melodica. https://t.co/f5gBikwWFz
