You could almost imagine the aspiring winemakers studying. On April 9, a group of Napa Valley College (NVC) donors known as the President's Circle Giving Society took part in a hard-hat tour of the Wine Spectator Wine Education Center. Funded by a $10 million dollar gift, the largest donation ever made by the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation and the largest gift NVC has ever received, the center will offer hundreds of students the chance to pursue a career in wine.

Over lunch at Slanted Door in Napa, Bouchaine winemaker and president Chris Kajani of Carneros is pouring a glass of something new-Bouchaine's first vintage-dated, estate grown de-alcoholized wine, a 2023 rosé of Pinot Noir. "The 2023 vintage was not a shy vintage," says Kajani. With a big harvest and a surplus of grapes, they decided to dip their toe into the de-alcoholized category.

In a brief statement to its wine club members, Napa's Newton Vineyard announced Feb. 13 that the winery is permanently closing. "We have cherished every moment spent crafting exceptional wines and sharing them with our dedicated wine club members," the announcement read. The winery, owned by luxury giant LVMH since 2001, was destroyed in the 2020 Glass fire and has been making wine in a temporary space since. The statement cited the fire as the reason ownership made the difficult decision.
