MOOSE LAKE, Minn. – 42-people were displaced early in the morning of May 9, 2025 after an apartment fire. Moose Lake Fire District firefighters says they responded to Hillside Manor West and discovered a smoke filled building. An apartment on third floor had a small kitchen fire but the sprinklers system had extinguished it. There were no injuries. There was moderate fire damage to the apartment and water damage to several others on multiple floors.

ASHLAND, Wis. – Ashland Police say the were called to a home on Prentice Avenue on the evening of May 8, 2025. When they arrived they were told there was one person in the basement that may be armed. Police were able to take the person into custody. After a search, police say they discovered what they thought was potentially an explosive device. The Marathon County Bomb Squad was called in to safely remove the device. It was not immediacy released if the device was explosive or not.

EVELETH, Minn. – The front of an apartment building in Eveleth collapsed the morning of May 8, 2025. The Friends of the Northland FireWire says the incident occurred around 11:00 at the Essling Apartments at the corner of Jones Street and Adams Avenue near downtown Eveleth. No injuries have been reported. The area has been closed down. The Eveleth, Fayal, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, Central Lakes. Biwabik Township and Clinton fire departments are on the scene along with the Eveleth Ambulance Service.

GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP, Minn. – A small campfire spread and started a cabin on fire plus the burned some surrounding woods. It happened on May 8th, 2025 around 3:00pm on the 4500 Block of Serenity Point Road, in Greenwood Township. The cabin was a total loss. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says multiple fire departments responded and were able to contain the fire so that no other property was lost. There were no injuries associated with this incident.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Robert Prevost has been elected the first pope from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. The Chicago-born missionary took the name Leo XIV. In his first words as Pope Francis’ successor, he emphasized peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization. Most Rev. James P. Powers Bishop of Superior released a letter in response in to the selection of Leo XIV.
