St. Paul seeking applicants to temporarily fill Ward 4 council seat before election

The St. Paul City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancy left by council member Mitra Jalali to represent Ward 4 until a special election can be held later in the year. So far eight people have applied and the deadline is Thursday, March 13. The city plans to hold a special election for the Ward 4 vacancy in August of 2025.

The owner of the Trail Center Lodge near Grand Marais caught a Canada lynx on a casual stroll along her porch on Sunday. Sarah Hamilton, the owner of Trail Center Lodge, said she at first thought her dog was reacting to a fox, but then noticed the length of the creature and caught it on video. “He just went all the way around my house. And I caught him on the front deck once I got my dog under control,” Hamilton said. As of Wednesday, the video uploaded to Facebook has received over 31,000 views.

(Matt Mikus – Minnesota News) – After receiving more than 7,300 creative names, MnDOT released their 50 finalist names to begin the voting round. The contest offers people the chance to submit ideas and eventually vote to pick eight winners — with those winning names going on plows in each of MnDOT’s eight districts around the state. Want to vote? You can pick up to eight names, and voting is open until noon on Friday, Feb. 7. Visit the MnDOT website to cast your vote.

St. Paul arts organization builds virtual Winter Carnival ice castles in Minecraft

If it’s a bit too cold to enjoy the Winter Carnival (although it’s never too cold, just add more layers) you could consider creating your own ice castle online. Community arts organization 825 Arts in St. Paul will host an ice castle contest online through the video game Minecraft on Saturday, partnering with a local historian to share the history and creativity of ice sculptures at the Winter Carnival.
Stretches of Interstates 94, 494 to close this weekend in Twin Cities

If you’re traveling this weekend on Interstate 94 in St. Paul, or on Interstate 494 in Bloomington and Richfield, you may have to take a detour. Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, I-94 will be closed to thru-traffic both directions between Interstate 35E in downtown St. Paul and and Highways 10 and 61 on the city’s east side, to allow crews to demolish a bridge over the freeway. The closure will remain in place until 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9.

A recent study commissioned by the St. Paul Downtown Alliance identifies 10 buildings in the downtown area that could easily be converted from office space to residential units. Since the release of an investment and revitalization plan for downtown St. Paul in March, leaders of city’s downtown area say the district is seeing improvements, but many still see concerns of low foot traffic and not enough amenities for residents.
