The state has had no shortage of rainy days over the past few weeks, but a new report from State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd shows the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office has not saved up for one. On the contrary, Byrd’s audit highlights poor financial practices within the agency — no surprise after her office released Part One of the review in June 2024, the same month Cleveland County Sheriff Chris Amason was reelected with 53.4 percent of the vote in a three-way race.

Oklahoma City’s homeless population grew by 2.4 percent over the past year. Still, that total represents a double-digit decrease in growth following the end of COVID-19 aid, according to new numbers released by the City of OKC at its State of Homelessness address Tuesday at the Oklahoma History Center. Each January, the city conducts a point-in-time count to gauge OKC’s homeless population. The most recent count earlier this year found 1,882 homeless people.

JeKia Harrison and Aletia Timmons have filed to run in the June 10 Democratic primary election for House District 97, which was vacated by former Rep. Jason Lowe (D-OKC). Lowe resigned this month after being elected to the Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners in February. No GOP candidates filed for the HD 97 primary, meaning the winner of the Democratic primary will win the seat. House District 97 includes Forest Park, Jones, Lake Aluma, Midwest City, Spencer, and parts of Oklahoma City.

In elections across Oklahoma County on Tuesday, Camal Pennington defeated John Pettis Jr. in a hotly contested runoff to represent OKC City Council Ward 7, and Rep. Jason Lowe (D-OKC) swamped independent Jed Green to win a seat on the Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners for District 1. Meanwhile, Marvin Provo was reelected to the Millwood Public Schools Board of Education. All election results are unofficial until they are certified by the Oklahoma State Election Board.
