    During oral arguments held Tuesday, attorneys for the Oklahoma Republican Party argued to the Oklahoma Supreme Court that a proposed initiative petition is unconstitutional because it forces political parties to support candidates they may not normally support. In contrast, the petition’s proponents told justices there is precedent to do just that based on past rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Former Oklahoma County District Court Judge Aletia Timmons won the special election for House District 97 on Tuesday night, defeating JeKia Harrison to fill the remainder of former Rep. Jason Lowe’s term. Timmons picked up 59.07 percent of the vote. Harrison, currently a legislative assistant in the House, finished with 40.93 after all 17 precincts had reported. Both Timmons and Harrison are Democrats, and no other candidate filed for the special election in HD 97.

Now, after the U.S. Supreme Court vacated his conviction and sent the case back to Oklahoma County for a new trial, Glossip appears set to be prosecuted once again. This time, however, prosecutors say he will not face the death penalty if convicted.
