SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Most Holy Rosary Church Pastor Father Fred Mannara said he was astounded to see the new Pope, Leo XIV, was from America. "I wasn't looking for an American Pope, but Leo XIV spoke to me about why he chose that name," said Father Mannara. Father Mannara explained that Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903, was a central figure in the church for social justice. He noted that Pope Leo XIII shared concerns with people who were working during the Industrial Revolution.

UTICA, N.Y. — Three former Marcy Correctional Facility Officers are set to be in Oneida County Court on May 13. Anthony Farina, Nicholas Kieffer and David Kingsley will be in court as they consider their plea deals. The three men are facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal beating of inmate Robert Brooks in December 2024. Farina, Kieffer and Kingleys were granted additional time to consider their plea deal on April 29 by Judge Bauer.

FLOYD, N.Y. — The Rome Police Department released the name of a man who was found dead in the Town of Floyd on May 11. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Brandon J. Montalbano, 40, of Rome, N.Y. He was located by the Oneida County Sheriff's Office Dive Team in the Erie Canal off of Route 49. They responded to a report of a drowning. Rome Police said Montalbano was last seen on April 2. He was reported missing by his family on April 24.
