This federal election, both major parties have offered a “grab bag” of policy fixes for Australia’s stubborn housing affordability crisis. But there are still two big policy elephants in the room, which neither side wants to touch. The first is negative gearing. This can apply to business losses relating to any investment. But in the context of housing, it allows property investors to claim annual losses incurred renting out an investment property as deductions against their taxable income.

AbstractWe introduce and apply Bayesian Reconstruction and Evolutionary Analysis of Transmission Histories (BREATH), a method to simultaneously construct phylogenetic trees and transmission trees using sequence data for a person-to-person outbreak. BREATH's transmission process that accounts for a flexible natural history of infection (including a latent period if desired) and a separate process for sampling.

AbstractUsing directed evolution, engineered aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRS) have been developed that enable co-translational incorporation of numerous noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) into proteins in living cells. Until now, the selection of such novel aaRS mutants has relied on coupling their activity to the expression of a reporter protein with a selectable phenotype.
