TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka leaders are inviting locals to swing by a special ceremony honoring a submarine that has a special connection to the Capital City. Dan Garrett, spokesman for the City of Topeka, said in a press release on April 22 that people are invited to attend a special ceremony at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 5 at the Cyrus K. Holliday parking lot in the downtown area. Members of the USS Topeka namesake committee will present the city with memorabilia from the recently decommissioned submarine.

City of Topeka spokesman Dan Garrett announced in a press release that Lieutenant Eddie Stanley suffered a medical emergency at his home on April 21. He initially joined the TPD on Dec. 3, 2001.

Sean Zears with SCP+R told 27 News SCP+R staff are working to repair some damage done to a flower bed area after some larger flower pots were taken by unknown individuals at the Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee on Monday, April 21.

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local park will be set on fire in the coming days, but people shouldn’t find this as a reason to panic. Sean Zears with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation (SCP+R) said in a press release that a controlled burn is set occur sometime between April 21 and May 9. The fire will be used to get rid of woody undergrowth and preserve Skyline Park’s prairie area. Zears said the burn is something that comes back annually but can only take place when weather conditions are perfect.
