Adventurers who are drawn to the mountainous northwest corner of Martinique, appreciate discovering Pomme Cannelle Village. The three-star, 21-unit hotel in the town of Le Precheur is quiet, clean, and offers great value. Comparing this French West Indies island to the Dominican Republic, (another Caribbean island I visited recently) was like comparing apples and oranges.

I was drawn to the French Caribbean island of Martinique for its world-class vanilla, cocao, and rum. But on a recent trip what really made me smile was the sweet Hotel Bambou in Trois-Ilets. The hotel was in the process of upgrading from three stars to four and I could see why. It offered easy beach access (all beaches are open to the public in Martinique), two pools, excellent food, and brightly colored bungalows snugged together in a tropical garden setting.

On my recent visit, I learned it was a host hotel for the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. The lobby was crawling with excited 12-year-old boys.

It’s little surprise that Canada is the top source of international tourists to the US, contributing more than $20bn to the country’s economy. It works the other way, too, with US tourists spending roughly the same in Canadian dollars. However, a popular cross-border region favoured by holidaymakers on both sides is caught in the crosshairs of the Trump administration’s recently imposed trade tariffs on Canada.
