Large-scale, long-duration energy storage (LDES) facilities such as pumped hydro sites will be critical to support the ideal amount of solar generation capacity in Spain, as calculated by Madrid-based campaign group Ecologists in Action. The environmental group has calculated the volume of clean energy generation capacity that would be required for a 100% renewables grid by 2030, using various scenarios.

MITECO’s consultation exercise, which is open until April 11, will consider, among other topics, how to address regulation to drive energy storage on the nation’s islands, which storage technology options are most appropriate, and whether economic or administrative barriers are holding up storage deployment. The exercise will ask how island energy storage should be developed and which management model would be best for current electricity production and dispatch procedures.

APPA’s latest monthly report logged 20 GW of energy storage-related grid demand-access requests in Spain. The association’s latest figures indicated more than 112 GW of permitted renewable energy sites in Spain in February. Another 54.5 GW requested permits. The maximum power that renewables could inject into the grid in February stood at 142 GW.

UK developer ILI Group has put five developed BESS projects up for sale, with a total power output of 350 MW. All five projects marketed by the group are in Scotland, and ILI Group CEO Mark Wilson told ESS News that each is “Gate 2 ready” – meaning they meet the National Electricity System Operator’s (NESO) criteria to apply for an accelerated grid connection, as part of NESO’s ongoing work to rationalize the connections queue.

PV trade body SolarPower Europe is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the tagline SolarPower Europe: solar, storage, and flexibility, and has announced plans for a Battery Storage Europe platform to highlight case studies and regulatory best practice. The platform will also strengthen SolarPower Europe’s storage policy advocacy work, the association said.
