Homes have been inundated and people are on their roofs as record flooding swamps the New South Wales Mid North Coast. The Manning River is flooding at a level never seen before at Taree, surpassing the 1929 record of 6 metres early this morning, and is still rising. During the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) responded to 887 incidents, including 118 flood rescues.

Authorities are investigating how a load of turf laden with fire ants was certified as treated and clear before being delivered to a property on the NSW north coast. The ants, including six queens, were found at Eureka in the Byron Shire, 53 kilometres from the Queensland border. A landscaper discovered the ants on Tuesday in turf delivered by a South-East QLD supplier.

When 17-year-old Nikolas Leimanis-Budden collapsed into a seizure at his local gym, the first thing staff did was call for an ambulance. His mother Julia Leimanis who was at the gym with her son at the time described it as "terrifying". "I thought Nik was dying. [He'd] never experienced anything like that before," she said. After waiting more than half an hour for the sound of sirens, Ms Leimanis grew more desperate.

A friend of a teenager whose body was found on train tracks 36 years ago has told a coroner his then-girlfriend is scared to come forward with details about what happened on the night before his death. Mark Haines' name and photo have been used with the permission of his family. Mark Anthony Haines's body was found on train tracks eight kilometres south of Tamworth on the morning of January 16, 1988. He had suffered a head injury.

Rainfall is already breaking records on the NSW north coast. The SES is asking people to prepare their homes and check their emergency plans as a trough moves along the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast. Predictions are that another 100mm could fall in the state's north across Wednesday before the trough moves offshore. Record-breaking rain has fallen in northern New South Wales as emergency services prepare for further falls in an already soaked catchment.
