CARSON CITY — Gov. Joe Lombardo wielded his veto power as the Legislature wrapped on Monday, rejecting bills that proposed protecting the trans community and allowing certain non-U.S. citizens to work as police officers. Last session, the governor broke a record of the most bills vetoed in a single session with 75 vetoes. Lombardo could break his own record this session. He has 10 days to either sign or veto the bills passed in the Legislature. The governor has vetoed 15 bills as of Monday night.

CARSON CITY — As the clock ticked toward midnight Monday, the deadline for which legislators must finish their business, the Senate was in gridlock, leaving the majority of Gov. Joe Lombardo’s signature policy bills dead unless he calls a special session. As of Tuesday morning, a special session seems unlikely. The biggest talk of the 120-day session was a multi-billion dollar tax proposal to bring a film studio to Summerlin.

CARSON CITY — An eleventh-hour amendment to Gov. Joe Lombardo’s health care reform bill caused the measure to pass the state Senate on party-line votes Monday night with his own party in opposition. Senate Bill 495 included additions that would prohibit new freestanding emergency rooms from being within a five-mile radius of an existing center or hospital. It also required the centers to provide urgent care services — something that proponents said is to address incorrect billing for services.

CARSON CITY — New additions proposed in Gov. Joe Lombardo’s policy proposal to address the state’s housing crisis include a new tier of affordable housing and bond funding for infrastructure near new attainable housing projects. The amendment to Assembly Bill 540, brought by state Sen. Edgar Flores, D-Las Vegas, includes $50 million in bonds. It also creates “tier one affordable housing” for households whose monthly gross income is no more than 30 percent of the area median income.

CARSON CITY — A bill defining antisemitism for discrimination investigations will head to the governor’s desk following lawmakers last votes on the measure Monday night. Senate Bill 179 defines the term for Nevada Equal Rights Commission investigations into discrimination in housing, employment and accommodations. SB 179 — initially proposed to bill sponsor state Sen. James Ohrenschall, D-Las Vegas, by two Jewish Las Vegas teens — faced some debate because of the definition used.
