DURAND — The Durand Memorial Library is about to undergo a significant interior overhaul. The library — which originally opened its doors in 1954 — is set to close on Jan. 8 for work expected to last a little more than two weeks, giving staff a cushion to prepare for a targeted reopening of Feb. 1. The work will constitute what Shiawassee District Library director Kimberly White calls “a major remodel” — one long overdue.

Aug. 9, 2021. It was my first day at the Manistee News Advocate and just the second time in my life I lived somewhere different than Lansing. I’m not well-traveled. I’m a creature of habit and gone was the backdrop of our state’s capital and the campus I fell in love with as a young boy. Everything was new. My marriage was new. Our wonderful daughter, Blaire, was just 11 months old at the time, and I had not worked for a newspaper before.
