Dundalk Grammar School will introduce Gaelic football for senior cycle students from next year. Students had previously staged protests over the refusal by school management to allow them to participate in the sport and compete in school competitions.

A former school welfare officer and army cadet leader from Co Down has been jailed for 18 months for sexually assaulting teenage girls. Neil Beckett, with an address at Kilmore, near Crossgar, was previously found guilty of 16 counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual grooming. The offences spanned a period of eight years between 2015 and 2023. The 44-year-old father-of-one worked as a welfare officer at Lagan College, an integrated secondary school in Belfast.

He also thanked when Meath County councillors met for their last meeting of the year. Two absentees were notable – Aisling Dempsey, former councillor and now TD for Meath West and Gillian Toole, former councillor and now TD for Meath East.

The loss of the seat held by former Minister of State Damien English since 2002 is a political earthquake in the Meath West constituency. English had announced his retirement from the Dáil and had encouraged his parliamentary assistant Linda Nelson Murray to attempt to succeed him. She managed to get on the first rung of the political ladder last June which she was elected for her party to Meath County Council but failed to get past. Johnny Guirke, Peadar Toibin or Aisling Dempsey.

As expected , Peadar Tóibín pictured above, has been re-elected to the 34th Dáil. His work at national level and local issues has not gone unnoticed by the electorate of Meath West. He got 1720 votes from Noel French as he was eliminated on the third count. It leaves Linda Nelson and Aisling Dempsey who is the likely candidate to fill the third final seat. As it stands Dempsey’s is on 8454 to Nelson’s 7823. We will have a result night here in Trim.

Sinn Fein’s Johnny Guirke became the first TD to be elected at the Meath West count in Trim. He had headed the poll from the start of the count at Trim. He was elected on the third count with 9,887 votes and the announcement was greeted with huge celebrations by family and supporters who carried an election poster of the late Sinn Fein Cllr Joe Reilly into the count hall. Next in line is Peadar Toibin, followed by Aisling Dempsey and Linda Nelson Murray.

Clearly, Sinn Fein’s Johnny Guirke is sweeping the boards at Meath West and is heading the poll. He is followed closely by Aontú’s Peadar Tóibín with 7,563 1st preferences. Where will the third seat go. While not exactly neck and neck FF’s Aisling Dempsey 6,535 and FG’s Linda Nelson Murray on 6,164 are extremely close and there is a lot to play for. Independent Noel French won’t be winning a seat but he had a creditable day at the office.
