Dundalk Grammar School will introduce Gaelic football for senior cycle students from next year. Students had previously staged protests over the refusal by school management to allow them to participate in the sport and compete in school competitions.

A former school welfare officer and army cadet leader from Co Down has been jailed for 18 months for sexually assaulting teenage girls. Neil Beckett, with an address at Kilmore, near Crossgar, was previously found guilty of 16 counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual grooming. The offences spanned a period of eight years between 2015 and 2023. The 44-year-old father-of-one worked as a welfare officer at Lagan College, an integrated secondary school in Belfast.

He also thanked when Meath County councillors met for their last meeting of the year. Two absentees were notable – Aisling Dempsey, former councillor and now TD for Meath West and Gillian Toole, former councillor and now TD for Meath East.

The loss of the seat held by former Minister of State Damien English since 2002 is a political earthquake in the Meath West constituency. English had announced his retirement from the Dáil and had encouraged his parliamentary assistant Linda Nelson Murray to attempt to succeed him. She managed to get on the first rung of the political ladder last June which she was elected for her party to Meath County Council but failed to get past.
