A four-month trial of hand-held metal detection wands by Tasmania police ended on April 2. A proposed law to crack down on knife crime — Reid's law — is set to pass parliament this week, and will allow police to search someone for a "dangerous article" if there is "reasonable suspicion" they may be carrying one. Under the proposed legislation, maximum penalties for possessing a dangerous article in a public place would double to $20,000 or three years in prison.

Cancer Council Tasmania is calling for an increase in government funding as demand for its services and the cost to deliver them increase. The not-for-profit, non-government organisation has supported more than 2,000 Tasmanians impacted by cancer in the past 12 months but says it is largely reliant on donations from the community. The state government says it is aware the Cancer Council has made a budget submission, and is working through all community submissions.

Tasmanian salmon companies are insisting their products are safe to eat while not directly answering questions about whether diseased fish are being sold for human consumption. In recent weeks, a bacterial outbreak has led to the mass deaths of farmed Atlantic salmon from pens in southern Tasmania.

A month on from salmon residue washing ashore, opponents to industrial fish farming have gathered at the Tasmanian beach location to repeat their call for the industry to be shut down. The protest event, at Verona Sands, south of Hobart, comes weeks after pieces of Atlantic salmon, including what was described at the time at "chunks" of fish, were found on the foreshore, with images posted by the Bob Brown Foundation.

A private hospital in Tasmania's south says it's preparing to pick up "as many" additional births "as possible" in light of the impending closure of Hobart Private Hospital's maternity services. "We won't let this go unattended," Calvary Health Care national chief executive Martin Bowles said.
