    Share FISH STARK: Humanists believe in people. We believe that people are inherently worthy, without needing to be saved or redeemed. We believe in human potential, that there's nothing humans can't solve and no truth we can’t uncover, as long as we live in free-thinking societies and we believe in human responsibility, the idea that our highest good and our highest moral calling is helping humans in the here and now. So, humanists are people who believe in the golden rule, but not in God.

    About 28% of adults in America are religiously unaffiliated, according to the Pew Research Center. But many people do seek community and something to believe in. That’s according to Fish Stark, the new president of the American Humanist Association. He will be speaking in Albuquerque and Santa Fe about what humanism offers to a divided America and talked with KUNM’s Megan Kamerick about what humanism means.     University Showcase, 5/20, 8:30a: In 2013, journalist and author Eric Schlosser wrote “Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety.” It offered a compelling account of accidents, near misses, and technological breakthroughs about the management of the nuclear arsenal. The book was later made into a documentary.

    Share Director of Festival Sefardí Hershel Weiss said when Nahalat Shalom synagogue was founded in the North Valley in 1982 the story of New Mexico’s hidden Jews was becoming more widely known . These were Jews who with came here with the Spanish to escape the Inquisition. They hid their identities, pretending to convert to Catholicism. Weiss said more people were finding their family roots in this story.
