When Jayla London arrived as a freshman at Houston ISD’s Yates High School in 2020, she wanted to pack her schedule with as many advanced courses as she could. By tenth grade, London was taking both Advanced Placement and dual credit courses that the school offered in partnership with Houston Community College. As a junior, she enrolled in the school’s International Baccalaureate courses, part of a rigorous national diploma program that teaches students critical thinking and research skills.

Every spring, more than 10,000 Houston ISD students, capped and draped in black, walk the stage in June to receive their high school diploma. What they do after graduation is less uniform. Just over half of HISD’s high school graduates will enroll in higher education within a year of graduation, and even fewer of those students will end up earning college degrees or making a living wage within six years.
