A search is underway for a child who fell into the water in Cooks Cove, N.S. In a social media post, the Nova Scotia RCMP said multiple agencies are participating in the search. The Stan Rogers Folk Festival announced its 2025 lineup Thursday. The 28th edition of the music festival, which takes place in Canso, N.S., from July 21 – 27, features folk, country, blues, soul, gospel, pop, rock and bluegrass artists. “The Stan Rogers Folk Festival has grown from the much-loved, weekend camping event, to a seven-day, folk music extravaganza!” said artistic director Steve MacIntyre in a news release.

Researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax say they’ve learned a genetic test can predict a person’s chances of developing certain mental health disorders. The researchers are using a polygenic score - a number that estimates a person’s risk for developing a disease based upon their genetic variants – to determine someone’s likelihood for developing major depression or bipolar disorder. “Polygenic scores bring together thousands of genetic variants across the person’s genome.

Police in Inverness County, N.S., say they recovered four stolen firearms near a school in Whycocomagh. Officers responded to a report that firearms were found on the ground near a school on the afternoon of April 10. “Upon arrival, officers were led to the firearms, which were found to be rusty and covered in grass. The firearms were subsequently seized,” reads a news release from the RCMP. Police say they learned the firearms were stolen during a break and enter in the community in June 2024.

An inmate at the Provincial Correctional Facility in Milton Station, P.E.I., will serve five more years in custody after taking a hostage at the facility. Jonathan Trainor was sentenced in Charlottetown provincial court on Friday to five years.
