NT coroner urged to find 'the truth' in Kumanjayi Walker inquest as inquiry wraps up after two years

The NT coroner began investigating the 2019 police shooting of Kumanjayi Walker in September 2022, with final submissions heard this past week. Lawyers have levelled serious allegations of racism at former constable Zachary Rolfe, who fatally shot Mr Walker. The coroner will hand down her findings and recommendations early next year, and has been invited to do so in Yuendumu.

The inquest into the 2019 police shooting death of Kumanjayi Walker, which started in September 2022, has resumed in Alice Springs. Counsel assisting the coroner Peggy Dwyer SC has made final submissions with scathing accusations of former NT police constable Zachary Rolfe . Coroner Elisabeth Armitage will spend the next two days hearing final arguments in the inquest, before adjourning to write her findings and recommendations.
