BELLEVILLE — As Illinois schools are out for the summer and parents consider if and when to leave their children home alone for any period of time, state law and best practices both likely factor into the decision-making process. The average cost of child care in Illinois is more than $16,000 per year for an infant or toddler in center-based care, according to nonprofit Child Care Aware of America, a figure that is unaffordable for many families.

Murray Police Department officials wrote in a June 10 Facebook post the man was later identified as 40-year-old Jonathan Mason. They said Mason left the scene and refused to roll down his windows or exit the vehicle when officers conducted a traffic stop on him, so they removed him from the vehicle.

Three Southern Illinois counties were among the top five in the state for population decline over a recent four-year period, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The state’s population also decreased as a whole. The bureau’s estimates of the resident population change from April 1, 2020, to July 1, 2024, released in March, show Alexander, Pulaski, Gallatin, Henderson and Greene counties lost the greatest percentage of residents.
