May 21-The Battle Ground City Council on Monday approved an ordinance that will allow the Washington State Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit of West Main Street to 30 mph. The road - also known as state Highway 502 - has been noted as a site of frequent crashes as people turn east from the neighborhood onto Main Street. The current speed limit is 40 mph from state Highway 503, or 10th Avenue, west to Northwest 30th Avenue, where it changes to 50 mph.

Eleven-year-old Raina Troupe is used to winding through tents to get to her school bus stop along Jefferson Street in downtown Vancouver. Her family’s little yellow house is occasionally surrounded by tarp-covered tents when the homeless camp in her neighborhood grows too large. Other children might be too afraid to walk her morning route, but the homeless camp has been part of her life since she was 6, she said. “It’s just gotten progressively worse,” said Raina’s mom, Rosalie Smith.

Share Vancouver now has another affordable housing building where older adults can age comfortably in place. Community leaders and members gathered Friday for the grand opening of Vancouver Housing Authority’s newest building, Laurel Manor. The 82-unit affordable housing complex at 3333 N.E. 66th Ave. has been open since January. The $34 million multi-agency project to house low-income residents 62 and older was funded through federal, state and local grants, as well as loans.
