Simply Recipes / Micah Siva Throughout high school and the summers during my college years, I worked at our local farmers market in Calgary, Canada. After a year scooping gelato, I switched over to working at a large produce stand that had a special feature: a “vegetable butcher” who would chop, dice, peel, and prepare your picks to make your week easier.

Simply Recipes / Adobe Stock I love making smoothies for breakfast, lunch, or even a midday snack. I like controlling what I put in, the flavor, and even sneaking in a few good-for-you ingredients to make sure I hit my fruit and vegetable goals for the day. For years, I was buying spinach for the sole purpose of adding it to my smoothies, until one day, I ran out. I knew I wanted something green, but didn’t have anything in the fridge.

Simply Recipes / Sally Vargas This week, I find myself out of town, which means my husband is left to fend for himself. My husband is one of the most talented, competent humans I’ve ever met, but when faced with the task of dinner, he often needs a little nudge in the right direction. Whenever I leave him to his own devices, I always stock the fridge with foods I know he’ll like, and fill the freezer (labelled!!) with easy meals I know he’ll like.

Simply Recipes / Photo by Andrew Bui / Food Styling by Kaitlin Wayne As a mom to a picky toddler and husband (yes, even food writers have picky kids), the quest for a weeknight dinner that my whole family will eat is a job in itself. I usually lean towards dishes that have components I know they’ll both enjoy, from sweet bell peppers to a healthy serving of hummus, with optional “adult” upgrades so I don’t feel like I’m stuck eating at the kids' table.

Simply Recipes / Micah Siva There’s something about a Caesar salad that hits all my cravings; it’s zesty, savory, creamy, and, most importantly, cheesy. If Caesar salad is on the menu, there’s an 85% chance I’m going to order it. I’ve lived away from my parents since I was 18, across the country, oceans, and continents. Every time I’d visit my parents, my dinner request was always a kale Caesar salad and cedar plank salmon.
