Red Bull's Max Verstappen took pole position for Sunday's Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, edging the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri with a scintillating lap at the Suzuka Circuit. Coming into qualifying, it seemed as if McLaren would be the team to beat, but Verstappen pulled out all the stops to post a time of 1:26.983, just 0.012s ahead of Norris and 0.044s clear of Piastri.

Granada, Spain has long been a cultural center. The landlocked city in Spain’s southern Andalusia region is home to one of the country’s oldest universities, and the sprawling Alhambra palace complex is Spain’s second most visited site. McLaren's Oscar Piastri took pole position for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix, edging Mercedes' George Russell by 0.082s to top Saturday's Qualifying session. A fresh layer of tarmac and warm and dry conditions contributed to a grippy surface at the Shanghai International Circuit, and Piastri's pole time of 1:30.641 was over three seconds quicker than Max Verstappen's benchmark from 2024.

In a wet-dry-wet race with three Safety Car deployments, Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri ran 1-2 for much of the event, but their 20-second advantage to Verstappen was wiped out when Fernando Alonso crashed his Aston Martin on lap 30 of 57.

Lando Norris underlined his status as favorite for the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, securing pole position for Sunday's season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. Norris' time of one minute 15.096 seconds on Saturday was almost one second faster than last year's pole position time, with teammate and local favorite Oscar Piastri lining up alongside him on the front row, as McLaren laid down a marker as the team to beat both in Australia and in 2025 more broadly.
