Starting Thursday, sidewalk work will have the right lanes closed at times at the Dyer Ditch bridge, according to information from the Indiana Department of Transportation posted on the town of Schererville's website. Restrictions are expected to be in place between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each day. Work is scheduled to continue until next Tuesday.

Lake County Circuit Court Referee Daniel Burke has been named the county's newest Superior Court judge. Governor Mike Braun announced the appointment Friday. When complete, the 60-mile trail will connect Chicago to Michigan, but that involves some complicated routes through Northwest Indiana's industrial areas. The Bishop of Gary is calling the election of the first American pope a great joy for the whole Church, but particularly for the local area. Bishop Robert McClory discussed the election of Pope Leo the 14th, in a Diocese of Gary Facebook video. "We have a new Holy Father and, praise the Lord, one who's from Chicagoland, who grew up right where we are," Bishop Robert McClory said Thursday in a Diocese of Gary Facebook video. Portage Council considers rezoning for U.S. 6 retail development

Plans for a Portage retail development with a possible Target store continue to move forward. An ordinance presented to the city council Tuesday would rezone more than 84 acres at the southeast corner of U.S. 6 and Airport Road, allowing for commercial and multi-family residential development. Attorney Dave Westland represents developer Simon CRE. He said the retail portion, to be known as The Landing at Portage, would include about 330,000 square feet of commercial space.
Bridge work to close parts of State Road 49

Parts of State Road 49 will be closed for bridge projects. Starting as soon as Thursday, State Road 49 will be closed between Jasper County roads 1000 and 1100 North, south of Wheatfield, while crews replace the bridge at Wolf Creek. Then around Monday, State Road 49 will close south of Kouts, between Porter County roads 1050 and 1125 South, for a bridge deck overlay project at Reeves Ditch.
