On May 6, several Kingstree Lions gathered at Springbank Retreat Center to clean the grounds and trim under the magnificent oaks gracing the property. Afterwards the group enjoyed refreshments while discussing the creation of a community garden. The Kingstree Lions Club serves the community in many ways. Projects include vision screening, Tooth Prints DNA collection at local schools, and environmental projects such as the annual Black River Cleanup.

The Williamsburg County Pee Dee Coalition is raising awareness in preventing child abuse and neglect. On April 3, a group met outside the Williamsburg County Courthouse to hear about the organization, statistics and other information. Afterwards, the group planted pinwheels along the median of Main Street, Kingstree. The pinwheel is the official symbol of child abuse and serves as a visual reminder of child abuse that occurs in our communities.

The HomeTown Chamber recently presented the Williamsburg County School District with the Image Award. The Image Award is presented to individuals, organizations and businesses who are members of Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber and who make a difference in their community through beautification and preservation of their property in Williamsburg County. The District has added a new fence at Kenneth Gardner Leadership Academy and is planning grounds projects that include shrubs and mulch.

“The greatest gift we can give to our children is an education,” said Kingstree Lions Club 2nd Vice District Governor, Janice Gamble before recognizing local artist, Kelise Gregory. Gregory is the Kingstree Lions Club winner of the 2025 Peace Poster contest. Her submission was selected for its originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “Peace Without Limits.”Miss Gregory is a student of C.E. Murray Middle School. She received a certificate and a monetary gift from the club.

The Kingstree Lions Club were recognized during their District 32C Convention. The club was awarded Club of the Year, Club Excellence and Past District Governor Louis Drucker received the Dr. Franklin G. Mason Fellowship Award. The Kingstree Lions Club is made up of over 45 members with some members having been active for over 40 years.
Cooper’s Country Store presented Chamber Image Award

The Williamsburg Hometown Chamber presented the Image Award to Cooper’s Country Store. Cooper’s Country Store is famous for many things, especially its country smoked ham and BBQ. The inside of the 88-year-old store has basically been untouched and hearkens back to a time when life was farming in the fields and sodas on the front porch. Cooper’s was established in 1937 by Theron Burrows. At that time the store was known as Burrow’s Service Station, hence the iconic gas station.

Over the past couple years there have been several changes at the Kingstree Recreation Center. As a result, the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber presented the staff with the Image Award. One’s first hint is the new digital sign as you enter the complex. The sign offers regular updates to the schedule of events. Michael Newell joined the staff as director in 2022 and since then he and his staff have been improving the ball fields. The Recreation Center is not the only property the staff maintains.
Crowd gathers to hear about the Black River Initiative

Staff from SC Parks Recreation & Tourism and the Open Space Institute provided updates on the Black River Parks Initiative, focusing on “The Meadows” at Black River State Park (9 miles from Kingstree, near Cooper’s Country Store). A crowd showed up at Williamsburg County Council Chambers where the meeting was held. Set for a soft opening in 2025 as the first of eight planned state park sites along the river.
