Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John Long is retiring from the University of Delaware, effective May 14.
Long has served on President Dennis Assanis’s senior leadership team since arriving at UD in March 2019. Long’s portfolio of professional responsibility includes oversight of campus and public safety, facilities, information technologies, real estate and the University police department.

While the use of lead pipes in new construction was banned in the United States in 1986, many older homes still receive water through lead pipes, which are considered a significant public health concern due to the potential for lead contamination in drinking water.
Last fall, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the Lead and Copper Improvements Rule, which requires that nearly every lead water pipe in the country be removed by 2037.

“This program has made a huge difference in reteaching my muscles how to work, but the positivity and the camaraderie keep me coming back,” Babiarz said. Research from UD’s College of Health Sciences identified a clear need in the community for rehabilitative programs — beyond physical therapy — for people with chronic health conditions.

Christine Pfeiffer of Middletown, a master sergeant in the Delaware Air National Guard, sought special permission to attend the program, sometimes via Zoom, when mission obligations came first. “They were very supportive,” Pfeiffer said of her military leadership. As she approaches 20 years of military service, Pfeiffer envisions a retirement framed in gardens and flowers, a passion she first cultivated as part of the horticulture academy track at the Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia.

The parishes have a need. The students have a skill. A volunteer program from the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems (MIS) at the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics brings them together.
The Episcopal Church is an international denomination based mostly in the U.S. It requires parishes in a diocese to get an annual audit, but audits can be time-consuming and expensive.

Emmalea Ernest, UD extension fruit and vegetable specialist, stands between rows of peppers for her heat stress trials, one of many topics she presented on mitigating heat stress for vegetables and fruits. Ernest explained that using a 30% black shade cloth significantly increased yield.

From there, a working group of pediatric researchers within CHS and school nurses, including Robinson and Hildick, was created. The group meets monthly and has worked to identify priorities they’ll work to address together, including access to healthcare, burnout, continued education and advocacy. The group recently published an editorial in the Journal of Advanced Nursing highlighting the impactful and organic community engagement effort.
