    Allen and Mary Jo Rabideaux have operated Rabideaux’s Orchard, one of the favored stops along the Bayfield Fruit Loop — the collection of 16 apple, berry and other fruit farms that attract thousands of visitors every year — for 60 years. This year they are being recognized for their decades of apple-growing by being named grand marshals for the Apple Festival Parade on Sunday, Oct. 8.

    It started out as a longshot effort to create interest in visiting the Chequamegon Bay country during the autumn, when most summer tourists have headed home. Russ Korpela, who headed up the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce at the time — an enthusiastic runner — thought a marathon race at the peak of fall color along the scenic Tri-County Recreational Corridor could spark fresh interest for visitors and a provide much-needed economic boost for the region.

    A Bayfield farm best known for its apple orchards and cider now is growing — and selling — a very different kind of tree. The family-owned Hauser’s Superior View Farm has become the first farm in the nation to commercialize a new variety of fast-growing tree. The tree has potential for a wide range of uses, including wood fiber, lumber, conservation, homeowner plantings and even pollution remediation.

    When artist Sue Prentice-Martinsen announced in 2021 that she was retiring from the grueling work of decorating Ashland buildings with historic murals, it spelled the end of a 23-year effort. But not so fast. Ashland’s Mural Walk soon will add a 22nd giant painting, and though Martinsen won’t be wielding a brush, the project has her heartfelt blessing.
