PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - Due to declining enrollment, the board of Universal Vare Charter School in South Philadelphia has decided not to seek a five-year charter renewal, putting the future of the school in question. Kenny Gamble's Universal Companies has operated the charter since 2011, but the upcoming school year will be Vare's last, operators said. CEO Dr. Penny Nixon said in a statement that "gentrification and declining birth rates have significantly impacted" enrollment.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - The Philadelphia School Board is considering renewals for 18 of the city's 81 charter schools. The board heard nearly five hours of testimony Thursday night, but no decisions were made. The district's Charter Schools Office presented evaluations of how the 18 schools up for renewal are doing when it comes to academics, finances and organization. In Philadelphia, it's up to the school board to authorize charters, which use public money but are independently run.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) - As state budget negotiations carry on in Harrisburg, SEPTA is continuing to make its case that it needs more funds to prevent drastic cuts. SEPTA GM Scott Sauer continued his lobbying at the Pennsylvania Capitol on Wednesday, where he's been laying out evidence to state Senate Republican leaders that SEPTA needs the additional $165 million it would get from Gov. Josh Shapiro's budget proposal. "It's not more than what we need," he said.
