The recent announcement of the latest Pulitzer Prizes brought to mind how Hollywood has handled our profession over the years with many examples of newsroom drama, tragedy, suspense and occasional comedy on the big screen. Since few get to see the inside of real newsroom activities and often go only by what they see or hear on the outside, a film’s portrayal of news events and their coverage can be a key way for the power and responsibility of the press to be discovered.

"She Said" reaches new ground as one of the few that highlights women journalists so well. This Frank Capra classic demonstrates how news coverage can promote a worthwhile cause, but also lead to power abuse. Few movies have been remade as often as this newsroom slapstick comedy that portrays a hard-driven newspaper editor and his ex-wife ace reporter.

The tall red oak that sits squarely in front of the elementary school on quiet Manetta Avenue first gained attention in 2018 when students and staff launched a campaign for historic status. The school sale could fetch more than $36 million on the open market, according to initial estimates. A closer appraisal is still being completed.

The new directive appears to be an effort to stem the tide of increasing violence and misbehavior at the school, which was recently revealed in new state data released in March. If students violate the dress code, the school will call their home and ask that “appropriate” clothing be brought to school for them. If not, the school says it will have clothes to change into.

The loan request, and a proposed $303.8 million budget for the 2025-2026 school year, were actually approved by State Monitor Louise Davis, who stepped in to override the board’s unanimous rejection. The new budget, which now goes to the county superintendent, will boost the school tax by about $88, or 2.4%, a year for an average township household. Lakewood Schools have faced a state aid crisis for more than a decade and are currently involved in a lawsuit demanding state aid be increased.
