"Loving v. Virginia" is a new opera co-commissioned by Virginia Opera and the Richmond Symphony, which will make its Richmond premiere this weekend in the Carpenter Theatre. Performances will be held Friday evening (5/9) at 7:30pm, Saturday evening (5/10) at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon (5/11) at 2:30pm. Loving v. Virginia was the Supreme Court case that overturned the conviction of Mildred and Richard Loving in 1967.

Molly Luther always had a dream of being a composer. She pursued her love of music from a young age by studying piano, but her evolution as a composer came later. In 1955, she acquired a masters degree in musicology from Columbia University and eventually began to focus on composing. While spending a year studying at the Royal College of Music in London, she wrote a piano sonata that won second place in a national competition.

This Saturday evening (5/3) at 7pm, Agecroft Hall & Gardens is presenting "Blame Not My Lute: An Evening with Ronn McFarlane and Robert Aubry Davis." It's a performance of Renaissance lute music accompanied by Elizabethan poetry. The lute was the most popular instrument of the Renaissance and Ronn strives to make it more accessible to a wider audience in the world today.

Meet saxophonist Cory Barnfield! He enjoys a successful career as a performer, recording artist and teacher. Cory performs frequently with the Louisville Orchestra and the Kentucky Opera. He's recorded several solo albums, most recently "Song and Dance" on Centaur Records. Cory is also very active as a music educator. He currently teaches music and instrumental ensembles at Norton Commons in the Jefferson County Public Schools in Kentucky.

The Chamber Music Society of Central Virginia continues its 20th anniversary season this weekend with a free concert titled "Opus 20: Party of 7" in the Richmond Public Library. This performance will feature the Septet, Op. 20 by Ludwig van Beethoven and is FREE to attend! Included on the program is a new work "Exordium" by Antonio Garcia, written as a "prelude" to the Septet. I caught up with Artistic Director James Wilson to preview the concert, which will be this Saturday, April 5th at 2pm.
