Pete Fry is now Vancouver’s lone opposition city councillor in a chamber dominated by Mayor Ken Sim and seven ABC Vancouver councillors.
Fry’s longtime Green Party colleague and friend Adriane Carr resigned Jan. 15.
Another colleague, Christine Boyle, won the NDP’s seat in Vancouver-Little Mountain in the fall provincial election and has since been appointed Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.

The White House announced Tuesday that it will extend amnesty protections for at least another year for illegal aliens protected by the program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. In the interim, the Trump administration will conduct another review of the DACA program to address the Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision on it. The Obama administration created this illegal program in 2012.

The B.C. government says it has invested more than $3.5 billion since 2018 to expand and improve “quality care” for seniors, including investments in primary care, home health, long-term care, assisted living and respite services.
The ministries of housing and health provided the information in a lengthy emailed response to Glacier Media’s questions related to shortages in Vancouver of subsidized long-term care beds, assisted living units and seniors’ affordable housing.

A high-profile member of the Vancouver Police Board who resigned Jan. 30 has gone public to explain the reasons for leaving her post on the independent civilian oversight body of the police department.
In a written statement provided to Glacier Media Tuesday, Faye Wightman alleged interference in board matters from Mayor Ken Sim’s political staff, a “flawed” governance structure and concerns about potential conflict of interest related to two board members.

Vancouver’s 10 city councillors will each earn almost $102,000 in base salary this year. The increase from $98,585 in 2023 to $101,937 is because of a 3.4 per cent raise that kicked in Jan. 1, according to information supplied by the city’s communications department to Glacier Media. Though the increase wasn’t as significant as the boost in 2023 — 7.3 per cent — councillors’ salaries have steadily increased in years, with their base salary roughly $10,000 lower in 2022 at $91,878.

Vancouver’s integrity commissioner has ruled that Mayor Ken Sim and three ABC Vancouver councillors did not breach the city’s code of conduct when they promoted a Rolling Stones concert scheduled for July 2024 at BC Place Stadium. Sim and councillors Sarah Kirby-Yung, Peter Meiszner and Mike Klassen were the subject of a complaint from a citizen concerned about the Stones’ iconic tongue-and-lips logo being displayed Nov. 21, 2023 on the facade of city hall.
