Police in Nanaimo, B.C., say a search is underway both at sea and on land after a woman's sailboat was discovered washed ashore and empty. Mounties say 34-year-old Amber Nitchman is the registered owner of the 10-metre white sailboat that was found Thursday near Bayshore Drive and Hammond Bay Road off Nanaimo. No one was on the boat, and Nanaimo Search and Rescue, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Center, the coast guard and Nanaimo RCMP have taken part in a ground and water search for the woman.

A near miss between two high-wing aircraft at Powell River Airport has been captured on video. Video evidence posted to Instagram by Combat learjet on May 9 shows a cockpit view of an aircraft coming in to land on the inland approach to the airport when another aircraft swoops in from the right into the path of the aircraft that is taking the video. The trailing aircraft takes evasive action, climbing out of the path of the other landing aircraft.

A long-awaited public hearing is scheduled for Thursday on a controversial proposal to build three rental housing towers on property currently occupied by Safeway near Commercial Drive and Broadway. The proposal has been a long time in the making, with a rezoning application submitted in 2019, which was followed by revisions and then withdrawn in August 2023. A new application was submitted in November 2023 and revised again in May 2024.

It seems that Havn will be seeking a new safe harbour. The floating sauna company had planned to bring a barge to False Creek to replicate the setup they have in Victoria, but that has fallen through. "So the location at False Creek/Plaza of Nations has fallen through. Onex Corp. is selling minority stakes in WestJet to Delta Air Lines and Korean Air for a total of US$550 million. Under the deals announced Friday, Delta will acquire a 15 per cent stake in the Calgary-based airline for US$330 million, while Korean Air will buy a 10 per cent stake for US$220 million. After the deal closes, Delta plans to sell a 2.3 per cent stake in WestJet to its joint venture partner Air France-KLM for US$50 million. Onex acquired WestJet in 2019.

An old BC Ferry went up in flames in the Lower Mainland early Saturday morning, prompting concerns about “hazardous emissions” from the fire. At 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the City of Mission activated its Emergency Operations Centre in response to the derelict Queen of Sydney going up in flames. The old ferry was located on the Fraser River, west of Mission.
