In January of 2000, an extraordinary winter storm brought record-breaking snowfall in what was a wild onset to a new era for the Triangle. It’s a phenomenon we haven’t seen since and may never see again. Intense snowfall, strong winds and waist-high accumulation were all parts of a rare blizzard that many were astonished to see. The start of a new year and a new decade brought an unforeseen happening that showed the future was here. But we got off on the wrong foot – of snow.

• The tornado touched down on July 19, 2023, around 12:30 p.m. in the Battleboro and Dortches communities in Nash County. • The tornado began as a thunderstorm warning in Edgecombe, Halifax and Nash counties. • Thunderstorm warnings were issued at 12:27 p.m., and the tornado warning was issued about five minutes later. • An estimated 90 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed, including the Pfizer plant.
