The state's Public Education Funding Commission voted Monday night, June 2, 2025, to move forward with plans to find a new school funding formula, specifically what it calls a hybrid framework. The plan would combine the current per student funding system with one that incorporates weighted block grants. State Senator Laura Sturgeon, the commission's chair, said they've been working since last fall to come up with a new idea for funding public education.

New Castle County Police have charged a 34-year old Bear area man with five counts of third degree rape where the victim is under the age of 16 in connection to a sexual relationship he allegedly had with a student. Police said the 14-year old female victim contacted them over the weekend about the relationship with 34-year old Joseph Caceres that went on from November 2024 to May of this year.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) continues to monitor air quality around the Delaware City refinery following an equipment malfunction first reported there on May 26, 2025. As a result of the incident, sulfur dioxide has been released from the facility. DNREC officials said while the levels of sulfur dioxide released have exceeded the plant's permits, they are well below health standards, and did not meet the criteria for an emergency notification.

Wilmington Police are investigating a shooting Sunday night, June 1, 2025, in the city's Hedgeville neighborhood. Officers went to the 1300 block of Linden Street around 9:15 p.m.They found a 23-year old man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. No other details were released.
