KENS-TV (San Antonio, TX)

On February 15, 1950, a group of innovative television pioneers launched KEYL, broadcasting from what is now known as the Tower Life Building. This marked the beginning of a significant legacy in serving the San Antonio community. In 1954, the station was acquired by the Express-News Company, and its call letters were changed to KENS, which stands for K-Express-News-Station. For over 70 years, KENS 5 has committed itself to being the most reliable source of news and entertainment for generations of San Antonians. The station has introduced several groundbreaking features to South Texas television, including the first helicopter for news coverage, its own Doppler radar, and the first morning news program in San Antonio. Today, KENS 5 continues to lead the way in local broadcasting, earning recognition from its peers for its excellence and innovative approach. KENS 5 has played a vital role in reshaping local news. As an early adopter of the Eyewitness News model, KENS 5 cameras have brought significant events directly into the homes of San Antonio viewers. From covering the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to reporting on the severe flooding in South Texas and the annual Fiesta celebrations, KENS 5 has consistently worked hard to keep the community informed. Today, KENS 5 is dedicated to evolving the traditional model of local news. Unlike many conventional newscasts, you won’t find an abundance of fire and car accident reports on KENS 5. Instead, we focus on what truly matters to our community, highlighting positive news and useful information. Our signature segments include Neighborhood Eats, Texas Outdoors, and Good Things Happen. The news brand has been updated and is affectionately referred to within the station as The KENS Lens.
