Tonight, a total lunar eclipse will rise over Nashville, making our nearest natural satellite glow red for the first time in nearly three years. Checking out a total lunar eclipse isn’t difficult. You don’t need any special equipment, just a relatively clear sky and a view of the Moon. Totality will begin at 1:26 a.m. CT Friday and last for a little over an hour. A total lunar eclipse happens when the full Moon slips into the deepest part of the Earth’s shadow.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes scored a Division I women’s freshman record 55 points on Sunday in a 98-88 overtime victory over Auburn. Blakes, a 5-foot-8 guard who is averaging 21.8 points, shot 15 for 28 from the field with two 3-pointers and made 23 of 24 free throws. She broke the record set by Elena Delle Donne, who scored 54 as a redshirt freshman at Delaware in a 2010 loss to James Madison.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — At least nine people have died in the most recent round of harsh weather to pummel the U.S., including eight people in Kentucky who died as creeks swelled from heavy rain and water covered roads. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Sunday that hundreds of people stranded by flooding had to be rescued.

Significant snow is coming to Middle Tennessee on Friday, with the possibility of 4 to 6 inches of accumulation throughout the day. The National Weather Service is warning that there could be travel impacts throughout the weekend, with slow melting and event refreezing in the overnight hours. Streets are likely to be snow-covered and icy for several days. Metro Nashville has listed 1,800 miles of roadway that are considered “snow removal priority routes.” You can find those routes here.

Kris Kristofferson, a Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma who became a country music superstar and an A-list Hollywood actor, has died. Kristofferson died at his home on Maui, Hawaii on Saturday, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email. He was 88. McFarland said Kristofferson died peacefully, surrounded by his family. No cause was given.

As floodwaters from Hurricane Helene quickly surrounded a small Tennessee hospital near a riverbank, workers first tried to get patients out by ambulance. Then, the road washed out. They tried to move people to the center of the low-slung building, but they were met by water. Once rescue boats arrived, the water was so dangerous they couldn’t leave.
